Leroy Poole of Stanfield and Jimmy Bowman of Asheboro, the first team in the 28-team field to come to the scales, erased any doubts about who would win the Dec. 6 Wishing Well Bass Tournament at Lake Tillery.
Poole and Bowman strained the scales with a catch of 26 pounds, 1 ounce that was bolstered with a hefty 9-pound largemouth bass, the big fish of the day.
The two anglers received $500 for first place and $280 for big-fish honors. They beat the next closest team by more than 9 pounds.
Rick Moore of Mt. Gilead and Russell Corey of Rockingham placed second with 16-08 and shared $240. Their kicker fish weighed 5 pounds, 7 ounces.
Clay Williams of Charlotte and Kevin Chandler of New London ranked third with 15-10 and earned $112. The Laurinburg team of James and Jim Weaver finished fourth with 15-08 and collected $56. Tony Lambert of Richfield and Dean Talbert of Albemarle took the fifth-place prize of $28 with 15-04.
Touring pro Britt Meyers of Lake Wylie, S.C., served as weighmaster in place of Fayetteville’s Marty Stone who was unable to attend.
The event raised $3,738.42 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central & Western North Carolina. A check for that amount was presented to Madison Spangler of Albemarle, a young lady who has undergone two major heart surgeries and recently had her wish come true by visiting Disney World in Florida.
Rick Erwin and Dennis O’Connor of the Central & Western N.C. chapter said each wish costs about $6,000 and last year a record number of wishes were granted to children with life-threatening illnesses.
They thanked the fishermen, God’s Country of Albemarle, and Sam Hurley, the tournament founder, for their support.
Alfred Kiesling Sr. of Mooresville and Cliff Kirby of Catawba won the Dec. 13 Ryan Newman Foundation Charity Bass Tournament at Lake Norman with 14.12 pounds.
For their victory, they received a Ranger boat powered with an Evinrude motor and $2,000.
