Virginia pro bags 17 pounds to lead Forrest Wood Cup by 8 ounces
Atop the leaderboard at the FLW Forrest Wood Cup championship, the hometown and the family didn’t change — just the name. Philip Jarabeck of Lynchburg, Va., caught the biggest stringer of the second day and replaced his uncle, David Dudley — also of Lynchburg — in first place.
Jarabeck’s five-fish, 17-pound limit from Lake Murray gave him a two-day total of 26 pounds, 4 ounces, good for a half-pound lead over Brent Ehrler of Redlands, Calif., who is at 25-12. Dudley, who led after Thursday’s first round, managed a little more than six pounds on Friday and dropped to sixth place with 23-15.
Brian Thrift of Shelby, N.C., is third with 25-0, followed by Michael Wooley of Collierville, Tenn., with 24-4 and Jacob Wheeler of Indianapolis rounding out the top five at 24-2.
South Carolina’s two entries with both fish on Saturday after the field was cut from 45 to 20. Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity is seventh with 23-5, and Casey Ashley of Donalds moved from 21st to 12th with 20-14.
The only other angler from the Carolinas, Matt Arey of Shelby, N.C., will also fish on Saturday, finishing 18th on Friday with 18-9.
The field will launch on Saturday morning at 7 a.m. from Dreher Island State Park. The weigh in will begin at 5 p.m. at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.
