Robert Boyles, S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ deputy director for the Marine Resources Division in Charleston, has been elected as vice chair of the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. Boyles was elected vice chair on Oct. 26 at an Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission meeting in Atlantic Beach, N.C., and will serve a two-year term.
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission was formed in 1942 and serves as a deliberative body, coordinating the conservation and management of the member states’ shared fishery resources for sustainable use. Commission members are comprised of representatives from the 15 Atlantic coastal states, who assemble to collaborate on five main policy areas: Interstate fisheries management, research and statistics, fisheries science, habitat conservation and law enforcement.
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s vision is for healthy, self-sustaining populations for all Atlantic coast fish species, or successful restoration in progress by 2015.
According to Tina Berger with the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, as vice chair, Boyles will be a member of the Commission’s Administrative Oversight Committee, which provides guidance to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission executive director and staff on fisheries policy, legislative issues, budget, funding and annual activity planning.
Boyles will also work closely with the newly elected chair, George Lapointe of Maine, and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Executive Director John V. O’Shea, during the next two years.
