Murder of tackle store owner shocks Murrells Inlet

One man charged with her murder, attempted arson

Murrells Inlet lost one of its favorites today. Jessica Lynn Hill, owner/operator of Perry’s Bait and Tackle, was killed near her store after a man tried to burn down her establishment. Murrells Inlet is at a loss after the death of Hill. She will be dearly missed by her customers, friends, and the entire Murrells Inlet community.

Established in 1954, Perry’s Bait and Tackle is located on Hwy. Business 17 right in the heart of Murrells Inlet. It’s a local landmark that every angler who visits this small quaint fishing village knows well. From fishing tackle and custom-tied rigs to a full complement of live bait, Perry’s Bait and Tackle is a must-do for any angler coming into the area to fish and crab.

For over a decade, Hill ran the tackle shop and was well-known in the community and across the state for her expert knowledge on local tactics. She was always quick to recommend rigs and fishing tactics to ensure her customers had a successful day on the water, and she always had a smile on her face while doing it. She knew just about everything there is to know about catching any of the popular species that swim in Murrells Inlet’s waters.

She was featured on numerous episodes of Reelin’ Up the Coast TV Show demonstrating her gift of tying rigs and teaching people how to become better anglers. Englis Glover, the show’s host, is one of the many Murrells Inlet residents deeply devastated by the loss of her in the community.

“She was one of the best rig-tying persons there were and she hardly ever got a chance to catch a fish,” Glover said. “But, she understood every fish and every knot. She was the best and will be missed.”

A post on the Perry’s Bait and Tackle Facebook page states:

“Jessica’s family and friends ask for your prayers in the coming days and weeks. Please keep her three children also in your thoughts and prayers as well. Also, we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your business and the love expressed over the years.”

Further details of her death and the attempted arson are still under investigation. The Georgetown Sheriff’s Department released a statement later today stating that an autopsy will be performed over the weekend to determine the cause of death.
