Spike it in the sand

Guide Walter White likes a surf spike with PVC pipe to hold the rod and a metal rod to stick into the sand.

While many beginning surf fishermen use PVC tube rod holders with an angled cut in the bottom, Walter White said there are other styles that are much more efficient.

“In some places, you can’t get the PVC holders deep enough into the sand,” he said. “They also break at the wrong time, while you’re fishing. Waves also wash around them so they drop your rod right into the sand swirling around in the saltwater.”

White buys or makes rod holders that have a PVC tube to hold the rod and a metal spike that holds the tube up and sticks down into the sand. Such a rod holder can be made from a piece of PVC pipe with a cap and a hole drilled into the cap to accept a piece of threaded rod. A nut on each side of the hole holds the threaded rod “spike” in place.
