Anthony Street allegedly threatened lawmakers

Anthony Wayne Street, an elected member of the Brunswick Soil and Water Conservation District, and a former candidate for statewide auditor, was arrested on June 20, 2025 and charged with “communicating threats to a legislative agent or court official.” The State Bureau of Investigation said he is being held on $25,000 bond.

The arrest stemmed from social media posts made by Street, showing his disapproval for a bill that has the potential to ban inshore shrimp trawling in North Carolina waters out to a half-mile off the coast.

“Forty-one senators in Raleigh need to understand what happened to Melissa Hortman and John Hoffman in Minnesota can happen here in North Carolina,” Street wrote, adding “the commercial fishermen of N.C. pray God will bless Bill Rabon and the other 40 state senators who have voted to end our way of life…be warned now you deserve to lose your lives!”

Hortman and Hoffman, both of whom are lawmakers in Minnesota, were shot in their homes on June 14.

Rabon is one of 41 senators who voted for the inshore trawling ban last week when the senate passed the bill. The bill must still pass North Carolina’s house to become law.

A public defender was appointed to Street’s case, and declined to comment to WRAL News.

The proposed inshore ban is a hot-button issue, with critics claiming the ban would destroy North Carolina’s shrimp business, and do grave harm to other related businesses like fish processing plants. Proponents of the ban say the inshore trawling damages fish stocks and habitat that has taken a toll on multiple species of inshore fish.
