Redfish creel limit and slot limit is changing
Due to what SCDNR officials are calling a “declining redfish population that has reached unsustainable levels,” South Carolina has a new set of regulations taking effect on July 1, 2026.
The new regulations call for a one-redfish limit per person, per day, with a slot size of 18 to 25 inches. The boat limit (as long as the boat has two or more licensed anglers) will be two fish per boat. That’s down from a boat limit of six.
Also, anglers fishing with natural bait and using a hook of 4/0 size or larger must use non-offset, non-stainless circle hooks.
The new redfish regs have wide support among fishing guides and organizations like CCA.
“Red drum management in the Palmetto State has consistently been a story about wise stewardship, and the recreational angling community has demonstrated again and again that acting in the long-term interest of the resource has always been the desired course.” said Tombo Milliken, CCA SC’s Government Relations Committee Chairman. “This is what collaborative conservation looks like. The passage of S. 961 represents a true team-oriented approach and sends a strong message that South Carolina can balance access, tradition, and management supported by science.”
SCDNR Marine Resources Deputy Director Blaik Keppler agrees.
“Red drum are an important part of South Carolina’s coastal resources and fishing heritage. This change is a proactive step toward rebuilding a sustainable fishery for the future. We appreciate the collaboration and input from anglers, partners, and legislators as we work together to improve the long-term health of the red drum population and the fishing opportunities it supports,” Keppler said.
