Pick your jig with a purpose

Different kinds of jigheads and soft-plastic trailers are better suited to targeting different speceies around different kinds of cover or bottom.

Most any type of jighead will work for catching flounder and puppy drum in the upper Neuse and Trent rivers near New Bern.

Anglers can pick jigs with natural hair or synthetic fiber dressings for extra action when bouncing the bottom primarily for flounder or use a swimming type of head for puppy drum.

The best bet is rigging several rods with different jigheads and different trailers so the appropriate outfit can be fished when each cover type comes within casting range.

“Do-nothing” jig trailers such as shrimp-mimickers work best for bouncing off the bottom, while curlytail, paddletail or shad-tail trailers work best for swimming beside grass beds, stick-ups and boat docks.

Swimbaits with pre-rigged, weighted hooks offer a good compromise between the two, and both Mark Hoff and Gary Dubiel depend upon them for most of their fishing.
