Other targets of opportunity

The spring cobia run off Cape Lookout will often put fishermen in range of some of the big black drum that are moving into the area.

Anglers often get shots at other species while targeting cobia on a sight-fishing trip.

Schools of big black drum move into the Cape Lookout area in May, at about the same time as the peak of the cobia swarm, and some of the black drum will be 35 pounds or up — big enough for a angling citation from the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries.

The recreational limit for black drum is 10 fish per day between 14 to 25 inches long, with only one fish longer than 25 inches permitted in a day’s catch.

The recreational creel limit for cobia is two fish daily, with a minimum size of 33 inches.
