Make sure you hit the spot

Fishermen in small boats need to know where kings will most likely be holding in nearshore waters under different wind conditions.

While there are some differences between the the way Jeff Beck and Chris Dawason approach king mackerel in small boats, there are a lot of similarities as well.

They have similar strategy when it comes to planning which fishing holes to visit and when. Dawson said Christmas Rock and the Fairway ledges are his favorite spots off the New Hanover County beaches. Additionally, both have the Dredge Wreck and the Carolina Beach sea buoy circled as places that can always produce a jumbo-sized king mackerel.

Wind direction is another thing to keep in mind, according to Beck and Dawson. On a hard southwest wind, fishing close to the beach out of Carolina Beach will be much more comfortable and often productive than making a longer run offshore or venturing to the south of Frying Pan Shoals. On the other hand, when the wind blows out of the northeast, it’s a simple matter to run down the Cape Fear River, pass Southport, and go out of the river channel. The shoals provide protection from the seas, and most of the holes close to the Brunswick County beaches, such as Cape Fear Rocks or Yaupon Reef will be in play.
