A heavy west or southwest wind blows the water out of the upper Neuse and Trent rivers at New Bern. Conversely, an easterly wind brings in more water and better fishing.
Anglers should concentrate their efforts during west winds on deeper areas such as the secondary points, or they should try fishing farther downstream in Neuse.
Wind can create other problems for fishermen, such as controlling a boat with a trolling motor or making an accurate cast. But the rivers’ twists and turns, islands, tree-lined banks and high bluffs make it possible for anglers to find places to fish that are protected from the wind.
Muddy water from heavy rains can muddy the water, which shuts down the bite. A big influx of freshwater also decreases the salinity. Anglers should move upstream or downstream, watching for clear, tannin water the color of strong tea.
As the water continues to cool down, fish become more active on sunny days. The best places to fish on cold days are structure areas along sunny banks.
