Hot lures and hottest fly for smallmouth bass

A Cordell Redfin is one of a handful of jerkbaits that will catch river smallmouth bass.

Befuddled about what to toss to bronzebacks? Try fan-casting hard-plastic jerkbaits such as the Cordell Redfin, Original Rapala, or Lucky Craft Pointer SP to eddies, current breaks, and main channel dropoffs.

When fly-fisherman Kevin Howell is faced with the same problem, he fan-casts his favorite warm-weather pattern.

“For me, the Walker’s Wiggler is the best summertime fly on the market,” Howell said. “The Wiggler works and functions just like a soft-plastic Fluke-type bait. Another great thing about this fly is that you can fish it on top with a floating line or from the mid depths down to the bottom with a sink tip. And it’s as effective on the bottom as it is on the surface.”
