Influx of shrimp sets fishery on fire
Fishermen along South Carolina’s coastline have been bragging all year about how great the fishing for redfish has been.
News flash: it’s getting even better — at least in the opinion of Capt. David Yates of Setay Charters in Mount Pleasant.
Yates, a veteran inshore guide, said that shrimp that are piling into marshes, bays, river and creeks has really got the redfish going.
“There is a ton of shrimp out there,” said Yates (843-437-0000). “Anybody can catch reds fishing live shrimp under a cork.”
Yates said the best tides have been the last part of the outgoing through the slack tide and the first part of the incoming tide, but fish have been biting through the entire tide cycle.
“You’ll catch 10 or 15 from one spot before you have to move,” he said. “The 5- and 6-pound fish are together, and the 2-pound fish are together, and every once in a while you’ll catch a 10-pound red.”
