Fish roll-ups

Don’t be afraid of using big artificial baits; this cobia regurgitated 11 small stingrays after it was boated.

Anglers should not shy away from using big lures such as heavy jigheads with foot-long artificial eels for cobia because they have huge appetites and cavernous mouths.

When they move to the sandbars of Cape Lookout and the navigation channels of Beaufort, Bogue and Barden inlets at night, they feed heavily on anything they can find, including stingrays. Anglers may see them following a school or rays, eating them by rolling them up like a Fruit Roll-Up snack. If you catch a cobia late in the day, he is likely to be filled with stingrays.

Stingrays do not make good pitch baits like menhaden. They are better baits for bottom fishing.
