Find a dock with character

Productive docks for winter redfish are typically situated near a creek mouth and are surrounded by oyster rakes and spartina grass.

When targeting redfish around docks, look for structures that are different from their neighbors.

It’s easy to discover a creek in the Lowcountry lined with dozens of docks, but it’s important to target redfish around docks on creeks with a more graduated bank, which will provide enough water for redfish to hang out at low tide. Also, oysters are home to plenty of live bait that’s stays around to be safe from dolphins as the tide falls.

A dock near a creek mouth, along with spartina grass and an oyster rake, guide Ja Malphrus said, will produce the strongest bite. Avoid a shallow, mud-lined bank.
