Exotic fare makes great bait

Conch (light) and false albacore (dark) are a good bait combo for black sea bass.

Gus Villanova has friends who visit Florida and bring home conch for soup, and he makes sure that none of it gets thrown out if it has a long stay in the freezer.

Sea bass love conch, and it is extremely tough, remaining on the hook much longer than cut fish and squid, so it’s one of Villanova’s favorite baits; he often pairs it with strips of false albacore on a 2-hook bottom rig.

The oily meat of false albacore, a fish that is often discarded by recreational anglers, drives sea bass into a feeding frenzy and can attract sea bass to the tougher bait. If an angler doesn’t have exotic bait like conch, the next choice is squid.
