Edisto Beach considers limiting surf fishing

Paul Davis of Lexington enjoys fishing on Edisto Beach, but the Edisto Beach Town Council has proposed limiting surf fishing during the summer months.

Town Council to vote on partial ban for summer months

The Edisto Beach Town Council is considering placing a limit on surf fishing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The Council is citing safety issues and beach litter as reasons behind the proposed partial ban.

An Edisto Beach Town Council meeting is scheduled for tomorrow, Oct. 11, at 6 p.m. where citizens are encouraged to give their input before a vote is cast.

Those not able to attend can visit www.townofedisto.com for council members’ contact information to let them know where you stand on this issue.

A post yesterday on Edisto Watersports and Tackle’s Facebook page has alerted many people that were unaware of the proposal, and a lively discussion ensued. The vast majority of responders were heavily opposed to the council’s ideas. Very few seemed in favor of the fishing limit, and a handful thought having designated swimming and designated fishing areas would be a good solution. Most, however, expressed support for keeping things as they now stand, with fishing and swimming being allowed throughout the entire beach.

How do you feel about a partial ban on fishing throughout the summer months on Edisto Beach, or on your own favorite vacation spot?
