Early-season bite good for speckled trout in Winyah Bay

Early season specks have shown up in good numbers in the Winyah Bay area

Grubs, early-morning topwaters have produced nice fish

Early season trout fishing has been fairly good in the Winyah Bay area, according to Steve Hedrick, who runs Reel EZ Guide Service out of Belle Island Marina in Georgetown.

“The speckled trout have been hitting in and around shell banks in the bay, and when the wind will let you, we’ve been catching some nice trout – and spot-tails – on the jetties,” said Hedrick (843-344-3474).

“The trout have been hitting grubs and topwaters early in the morning,” said Hedrick, who likes to fish curlytail Haw River grubs – his favorite color being gray glitter with a chartreuse tail.

“They’ve been around points and oyster beds – especially around islands. You have to be fishing in at least two or three feet of water. You’ll pick up a spot-tail occasionally.”

Hedrick said he’s been sticking to fairly small topwater bait like Pop-Rs or small, countdown Rapalas. He starts working the latter baits after they’ve sunk a foot or so below the surface.

The redfish that have been caught around the jetties have been hitting a float rig, with soft-shell crabs being the most productive baits.
