Does your ruler measure up?

Placing a ruler on a flat surface in a confined area will help keep black sea bass still enough to measure.

Sea bass, as well as other bottomfish that have size limits, are very animated, and their spines and gill covers are extremely sharp. Few anglers make it back to the dock without a puncture wound or two, because a black sea bass swinging on the end of a line is nothing less than a pincushion pendulum.

Placing a measuring device in a secure spot like the corner where the transom meets the deck helps sort sea bass fast, even in rolling seas and on a slippery surface.
