Beaufort-area redfish are turned on

Capt. Danny Rourk of Tailwind Charters in Beaufort has had some great days on redfish, but the day he had this past Friday was one of his best – and it capped a great week of fishing.

“We’ve been hammering them on live shrimp; we killed them the last seven days,” said Rourk (843-263-3863). “Every place we stopped, we threw a shrimp in and it the cork went away.”

But Friday was a day for the ages.

It started with a half-day trip on the Beaufort River. Using the last few live shrimp he had, Rourk’s party knocked out 15 to 20 redfish and a handful of speckled trout.

“When the tide started out, we started catching ‘em right up against the (marsh) grass,” Rourk said. “The water is unbelievably crystal clear, and that usually doesn’t happen until January.”

When he picked up his afternoon party for a trip on the Broad River, Rourk was out of shrimp, but that didn’t matter, because he had a fly-fisherman in the boat.

“We got to fish the last two hours of outgoing tide, and we were able to see the fish. My fisherman probably caught 20 on a copperhead fly – and he had probably five that were bigger than the slot (over 23 inches),” Rourk said.

“It was incredible. I’ve caught redfish on a fly before, but never 20 in one trip.”
