Wintering fish will stay very close to the beachfront.

Winter weather patterns usually direct winds from the north and west, laying down the ocean off the beach fronts along the Onslow County shoreline. Uunfavorable winds will show up, spoiling a fishing trip, but options exist for these conditions for part of these fishable areas.

Wintering fish will stay very close to the beachfront, often within the surf zone just feet away from the sand-castle region of the beach. During periods of unfavorable weather, anglers can park on the inside of these barrier islands and walk across the dunes to fish in the surf. These huge schools of fish become very accessible on foot under these conditions. However, some of Onslow Bay’s barrier island are off limits to temporary docking or mooring — and for good reason.

“At Brown Island, the military will not let you get on the beach. It is a bombing range. You can fish in front of Brown Island when the Navy is not firing artillery to the beach,” says Capt. Ricky Kellum of the Speckled Specialist Fishing Charters.

The remaining islands along the central coast are public areas offering the freedom to park and cross to fish the surf zone on the opposing side.
