Trolling at various depths is the key
The fishing on Lake Jocassee has been quite good lately, and trolling spoons deep has been the ticket to getting on a consistent bite.
Capt. Sam Jones of Jocassee Charters has been having some great trips in the past week, with good numbers of fish as well as some nice-sized trout, including one that tipped the scales at over 8 pounds.
As with the rest of the Carolinas, Lake Jocassee has seen plenty of unseasonably warm weather, but Jones said it hasn’t had much impact on the fish. For angler though, it’s been making from some very comfortable days on the water, and coupled with the hot bite, it makes it a good time to hit the lake for what many South Carolina anglers don’t even realize you can catch in the Palmetto State.
Jones has been trolling Sutton Spoons in a variety of sizes and colors. No. 31 and 71 have been producing nicely lately, and they are catching rainbows, browns, and the occasional largemouth and smallmouth bass. And he has been catching them in a variety of depths, from 30 feet to 100 feet deep.
On his most recent trip, Jones (864-280-9056) began the day trolling at the dam around 7 a.m. with client Tim Pfaffenroth. They hooked their first fish at a depth of 35 feet on a 31 Sutton Spoon. It came unhooked before making it to the net, but they saw that it was a large brown trout.
As they made their way to the Toxaway River, Jones said they caught their share of small rainbows and a bass. Then, as they neared Devil’s Hole Creek, they were trolling a minnow around 58 feet deep. That’s where Pfaffenroth caught their prize of the day, a brown that measured 27 inches in length, and weighed 8.2 pounds on the scales at Jocassee Outdoor Center.
“I can’t wait to get back out there tomorrow,” said Jones.
