67-year-old man was attempting to recover his boat

SCDNR divers found the body of a Georgetown, S.C. man Tuesday afternoon after he apparently drowned trying to recover his boat. Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway said the man was found dead at approximately 1:30 p.m. on June 29, 2021.

John Livingston, 67-years-old, was not on the scene when SCDNR officers arrived at about 8:30 a.m. They’d received a call about a truck and boat trailer sitting on the boat ramp at Harris Landing on the North Santee River. The truck’s engine was still running. An overturned boat, presumably that of Livingston’s, was floating nearby.

Authorities believe the boat got away from Livingston and that he attempted to swim to it in hopes of recovering the craft.

Divers began searching, and eventually found Livingston’s body not far from where the overturned boat was located. SCDNR and local law enforcement said the incident is being treated as a boating accident. No foul play is suspected.
