Wolak cashes twice, remains in hunt for berth in Classic

Dale Hege and Wayne Lawson of Ramseur had a couple of big days on Tuckertown Lake, winning a new Piedmont Team Tournament on July 25 and finishing second on Aug. 8.

Two pro fishermen from North Carolina placed in two different BASS events in mid-August, and two others each picked up a check.

Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, Marty Stone of Fayetteville, and Pat Golden of High Point received checks at the Aug. 20-22 Bassmaster Northern Open at Lake Champlain out of Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Wolak finished ninth with 51-06 and won $6,206; Stone placed 19th with 48-07 and took home $1,913; and Golden ranked 46th with 30-10 that was worth $517.

In the BASS Elite Series tournament on New York’s Oneida Lake, Wolak finished 22nd with 41-14, and Golden finished 33rd with 40-09. They won $9,506 each, as did Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount finished 32nd with 40-09.

Thus far, North Carolina fishermen have been shut out of the 2010 Bassmasters Classic, which will be held in late February on Alabama’s Lay Lake. Wolak had the highest finish for the Elite Series season, taking 49th place. The top 37 fishermen were guaranteed berths in the Classic.

Wolak is still in the running in the Northern Opens, standing in 11th place with one tournament left. David Cooke of Mooresville is 12th in the Southern Opens with one tournament remaining. Three top finishers from each division will earn Classic berths.

Thrift has Top-10 FLW finish

Shelby’s Bryan Thrift placed ninth and won $30,000 at the July 30-Aug. 1 FLW Championship out of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Thrift was second through the first two days with 12-2, qualifying him for the top 10 and the final two days of competition, with a first prize of $500,000 at stake. On the third and fourth days, his catch of 4-9 left him ninth.

Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., won the tournament. He led after the first two days with 14-13 and closed out with 9-9.

Coming and going…

The National Bass Circuit has canceled the Yadkin and Capital divisions of of its NBC Summer Sport Series. Declining entries contributed to the decision.

Les and Derek Tolley, both of Winston-Salem, have organized the Yadkin Wildcat Series, a new Friday-evening bass fishing trail that alternates between Tuckertown and High Rock lakes. The entry fee is $20. For details, e-mail: tolley@ctc.net.
