White perch could threaten Randleman slabs

Randleman Reservoir’s astounding crappie fishing may be short lived. According to Corey Oakley, a biologist with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, white perch will likely enter the lake upstream from Oak Hollow Lake and High Point City Lake and become established in Randleman.

White perch compete with crappie, and that can be detrimental to the number of crappie and to the size of individual crappie.

“The larger the reservoir, the better off it is when white perch become established and compete with crappie,” Oakley said. “We’re hoping that Randleman is big enough that white perch will not become too much of a problem.

“White perch create too much competition. They compete for food with crappie at younger ages and the perch and crappie will usually stunt over time.

“So, if you’re fishing at Randleman and happen to catch a white perch Randleman, you should always keep it.”
