Take a Troop Fishing event draws 67 servicemen from Fort Jackson
The second annual Lake Murray Take a Troop Fishing event on July 26 was a huge success, with 67 troops from Fort Jackson fishing with guides and expert striper fishermen from Lake Murray on boats flying the American flag.
The fishing was excellent, with some getting quick limits for all on board. One of the first boats in was guide Buddy Bouknight with limits of stripers for all of his troops.
One soldier on Bouknight’s boat was SFC Shawn Noble, who said he’d been very excited about this trip.
“It seemed to take forever for this day to get here, and it was certainly even better and more fun than I imagined,” Noble said. “The fishing was fantastic, and it was a great experience. We all appreciate the opportunity.”
One of the event coordinators, Mike Glover, said the event’s success was a cooperative effort from many sources.
“The Lake Murray Guide Association, the Midlands Striper Club, the (S.C. Department of Natural Resources) and lots of individual volunteers that organized the event and donated time to clean the fish for the troops were all essential,” Glover said.
Glover said that Paul and Brenda Shealy provided lunch, an important part of the event.
“It is a small token of how much we appreciate what they do,” Glover said. “Plus we all have a lot of fun.”
SFC Alford Reed summed it up for the troops and said it was an honor just to be chosen to fish.
“Not everyone gets to go, and this is a special and appreciated event for us. I had a great time catching fish,” he said.
