The Catfish Hunters

Lake Norman guide Mac Byrum helped write The Catfish Hunters, a travelogue about fishing the nation’s best catfish lakes.

Three years ago, Jake Bussolini, an author based in the Lake Norman area, solicited the assistance of guide Mac Byrum to co-author a book on the science and techniques behind catching giant catfish around the country. The resulting book “The Catfish Hunters” was published in November of 2011.

The book chronicles the exploits of the catfish hunters as they travel via small plane from South Carolina to North Dakota, visiting some of the country’s more famous catfish lakes and fishing with some of the best guides and anglers in each locale. The book has become a must-have guide for serious catters looking to up their game and understand the ways and means of cat fishing.

“Jake had already written three books, one about bass, one about stripers and then one called ‘Beneath the Waters about various species,” Byrum said. “He asked me to assist with a chapter on catfish for that book, and he received a lot of favorable comments about the maybe 25 pages or so on catfish.

“He made a proposal to me that the two of us could fly to all these different places. We fished with the best guides in every lake we went to and learned a lot about cat fishing all over the country.”

The 311 pages of “The Catfish Hunter’ are crammed full of details about the sport and science of fishing for catfish. It is easy to read, written by fishermen for fishermen. The science is made simple and understandable, and the various fishing techniques are clearly illustrated. The book contains more than 100 photos and illustrations.

In addition to the instructional and educational value, this book goes a step further by relating the experiences of the two authors as they traveled the Eastern United States, looking for new and different fishing approaches, used by other experienced anglers.

The book is available online from publisher Author House, and retails for $18. Visit http://bookstore.authorhouse.com/Products/SKU-000435662/The-Catfish-Hunters.aspx.
