Santee Cooper striper season closes June 15

The Santee striper fishing report for early June 2022 is plenty good. And with the season set to close on June 15, right now is the time to get on the water and see what it’s like to do battle with the South Carolina state fish.

Capt. Joe Dennis of Captain J. Hook Charters (843-245-3762) said the bulk of keeper-sized stripers are deep right now. He’s catching plenty of them each day on live herring. The morning hours have been the most consistent lately, but he said anglers can catch them later in the day as well with a little patience.

“They’re biting really good. We’ve been smoking them, and unless you want to wait until the fall, right now is the time to go. The season runs out on June 15 and it looks like we are going to have to stop while they are still biting hot,” said Dennis.

The Santee Cooper system’s striper season has a hard closure from June 15 until the fall. It’s not only illegal to harvest stripers during that time, it’s actually illegal to even fish for them.

Dennis said a bonus for striper anglers right now is that some catfish are mixed in, feeding on the same baitfish as the stripers. These aren’t small bait-thieving catfish but quality-sized fish. It’s not uncommon for some of Dennis’ anglers to catch their all-time biggest striper and biggest catfish in the same day.
