Russell’s unique fishery for yellow perch

Yellow perch are an overlooked fish on Lake Russell, where they are a big part of a great, deep-water winter fishery.

Guide Wendell Wilson said the most-unique fish he catches is the yellow perch, and winter is a good time to catch a bunch of these fish on any given day.

“Yellow perch can be caught any time we drop a bait down, but there are times and places when an area will be loaded with yellow perch,” Wilson said. “A lot of these fish will be in the pound or better size class, and they are a good fighting fish and wonderful table fare.

“They are really an overlooked fishery in this lake, and while we catch them along with other species in February, they are a good indicator that I’m fishing in the right place in the right manner. On a good day we may catch as many as 30 yellow perch, but only about half will be keeper-sized. But that’s still a good addition to the catch.”
