Manmade crappie magnets

The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has placed 16 fish attractors in Randleman Reservoir.

The attractors are made of juice barrels cut in half and fitted on frames of PVC pipe. The design allows the barrel halves to rotate if an angler catches it on the edge with a hook or lure, allowing the hook to pull free. A map with the locations of the attractors is available at the lake warden’s office.

Other man-made crappie attractors consist of cut-and-cabled trees along the shoreline. Commission staffers sawed partially through large trees along the bank, allowing them to fall into the water. The trunks may still be partially attached to the stumps, allowing some green growth so survive for a short time. The trunks are tied to the stumps with wire cables to hold them in place. Anglers can easily find the trees by looking for the cable-wrapped stumps.
