Make your own stinkbait

Channel cats are often overlooked in larger reservoirs that feature other popular species.

If you don’t want to buy a commercial stinkbait or dip bait, try this recipe.

• Cut three pounds of over-ripe cheese into small squares. Some fishermen prefer orange cheese, such as American or cheddar.

• Place the diced cheese into a large plastic container that has an air-tight lid.

• Cover the cheese with hot water and mash until a paste forms.

• Pulverize two to three pounds of raw chicken livers and blood in a blender.

• Add the chicken livers to the cheese-and-water paste. Mix thoroughly.

• Put the lid on the container, removing as much air as possible before. As the mixture ferments, it will create gases, and removing the air from the bucket will keep it from blowing the lid off.

• Mix in enough flour and cod liver oil to the fermented mixture to form a paste.
