Many anglers miss the strike of a crappie because they only feel a tap or hesitation as the lure falls.
Summertime crappie can be finicky, and often that tap is the only notice the angler gets that a strike has occurred.
Often, the problem is that fickle fish are only nipping at a jig’s curly-tail because they are not aggressive. Fishermen should change their retrieve, adding short twitches or sudden jerks to the ho-hum turning of the reel handle. If the twitch occurs as the crappie mouths the lure, the fish gets hooked.
The other cure for short-striking is pinching off the tip of the tail to make the lure shorter. The crappie chokes up on the shorter lure, and gets the hook deep enough to hang itself.
