Kitchen-sink fishery

Jim Cobb said fishermen often need just about every kind of jig or trailer in multiple colors to get finicky crappie to bite.

There is no common denominator in what lure it takes to catch summer crappie at Randleman Regional Reservoir.

Jim Cobb prefers standard, round-head jigs with black-and-silver trailers that have sparkle tails. Robert Shepherd likes to use a white Road Runner jig with a silver chin spinner and a yellow-and-white grub trailer. Both can be cast and retrieved, trolled or jigged.

Cobb likes open-faced spinning rigs while Shepherd prefers the good old Zebco 33 spin-casting reel because it doesn’t backlash.

It pays to have many different types of small jigheads and lures in the summertime, when hot water temperatures can make the crappie very finicky about what they will strike, as well as how the lure is presented.
