Griffin takes BFL Super event at Kerr

Henderson’s Ray Griffin won the Sept. 27-28 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division Super Tournament at Kerr Lake with a two-day haul of 23 pounds, 9 ounces and received $4,944.

He caught his fish around rocks, brush, and stumps with a 3/8-ounce jig.

Other Tar Heels in the money were Scott Collins of Raleigh, second, with 18-08 for $2,909; and Greg Lineberry of Creedmoor, third, with 16-12 for $1,939.

Collins claimed the big-fish award of $772 with a 4-pound, 11-ounce bass that struck a crankbait.

Jim Nichols of Chapel Hill topped the co-anglers with 9-15 and won $2,909.

Other co-angler scores were Anthony Wright of Rocky Mount, second, with 16-04 for $1,454; Michael Stephenson of Bahama, third, with 12-05 for $970; Terry Tolar of Elizabethtown, fourth, with 11-03 for $679; and Jamie Denison of Winston-Salem, fifth, with 10-15 for $582.

Matt Arey of Shelby placed fourth at the Sept. 27-28 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League South Carolina Division Super Tournament at Lake Wylie with a two-day catch of 27 pounds, 7 ounces and banked $4,518.

Scott Hamrick of Denver ranked fifth with 20-12 and collected $1,063.

Charlotte’s John Weise took the big-fish prize of $667 with a 5-pound, 1-ounce bass that hit a Zara Spook.

John Cook of Matthews finished second among the co-anglers with 11-01 and received $1,329. He also received $334 for a 5-pound, 10-ounce bass, the big fish of the day.

Other top co-anglers were Bryan New of Belmont, third, with 10-10 for $886; and Kenneth Morrison of Waxhaw, fifth, with 9-11 for $532.

Lenny Smathers and Chris Ritchie won the Sept. 27 Foothills Marina Bass Tournament at Lake Hickory. Their catch of 17.24 pounds was anchored with a 5.84-pound bass.

The two anglers took home a Skeeter ZX 180 boat and 150 hp Yamaha motor plus $1,484 in cash.

Proceeds from the tournament went to benefit the Katherine Wilson Memorial Scholarship Fund at the UNC School of Nursing.

Monroe’s John Strider placed 15th among the co-anglers at the Oct. 16-18 Bassmaster Southern Open at Lake Guntersville, Guntersville, Ala. Strider’s three-day catch of 26-05 paid $672.

John Hayes of Fayetteville landed an 8-pound, 1-ounce bass, the co-angler big fish for Day 1 of the event. He earned $300.
