Get out early and fish all day

Start early in the morning and stay all day if can; that’s the equation for catching a big Lake Wateree catfish.

Clay Henderson said fishing patterns will change as the day progresses, so he likes to go early and stay late.

“When I’m chasing big catfish, the time just flies by,” he said. “It’s a mental process where I get locked into figuring out where the fish are and what they’re doing based on prevailing conditions. It’s a lot of fun, and the early morning and late-afternoon bite may be different from a mid-day bright-light bite. Same is true for a cloudy or rainy day.

“There may be one time period when the big fish really turn on, and it can occur at any given time of the day. If at all possible, I want to be on the lake with bait in the water when that happens. Despite our best planning, fish will sometimes just ‘turn on’ and feed better. So we like to fish all day, and typically, there will be a time when we get into some good action that really makes the day.”
