Double down

Mike Marsh caught these white crappie at Tar River Reservoir. Their combined weight exceeded 3 pounds.

When fishing a slip-float rig near a dock, a pair of anglers should begin by fishing their minnows at two different depths. One angler fishes his bait shallow, a foot or two below the surface. The other angler fishes his bait a foot or two above the bottom.

On successive casts, each angler adjusts his line depth by using the bobber stop, with the shallower minnow moved deeper and the deeper minnow moved shallower. If the crappie have not started biting once the float adjustments make the minnows meet at the same depth, it’s time to move on and try another spot.
