Bayse, Gibson win Wishing Well event

Jerry Hill displays three stripers weighing 24.50 pounds that gave him the win at the Nov. 21 Tarheel Striper Club event at High Rock.

Near-freezing temperatures, a cold rain and the threat of snow probably discouraged a number of anglers from fishing the Wishing Well Bass Tournament on Dec. 5 at Lake Tillery.

The event is a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation for Central and Western North Carolina, which has granted 2,200 wishes during its history.

Despite the dreary weather, 14 teams blasted off at 7 a.m. in search of old bucketmouth.

Mark Bayse of Thomasville and Todd Gibson ran away from the field with six fish weighing 22.48 pounds, all caught with crankbaits. Their haul included a 7.52-pound bass, the big fish of the day.

Gibson and Bayse received $500 for first place and $130 for big-fish honors.

Clay Williams and David Redman placed a distant second with 16.88 pounds and shared $104. They caught their fish with spinnerbaits.

Other top teams included Leon Prince and Phillip King, third with 16.87 pounds for $52; James Blue and Wally Fields, fourth with 15.37 pounds for $26; and Randy Burleson and Harold Snuggs, fifth with 14.04 pounds for $13.

Haywoods win at Norman

Matt Haywood and Chris Haywood of Iron Station topped a field of 138 teams at the Ryan Newman Foundation Fishing Tournament on Dec. 12 at Lake Norman, weighing in more than 17 pounds to win a Ranger Z-520 bass boat and 200-hp Evinrude motor, plus accessories, valued at $45,000.

The benefit event encourages pet owners to spay/neuter their pets and adopt animals from animal shelters. It also provides college scholarships via the Rich Vogler Scholarship program for students pursuing careers in auto racing. In addition, it promotes appreciation of the great outdoors.
