Free fly-fishing retreat planned for women battling cancer

Casting for Recovery to be held at Brays Island Plantation.

Brays Island Plantation in Sheldon will hold a Casting for Recovery retreat Oct. 28-30 for South Carolina women who are in all stages of breast cancer recovery or treatment.

The free retreat will use elements of fly-fishing to promote physical and mental healing. Casting a fly rod provides a gentle exercise for joint and soft-tissue stretching, and fly-fishing provides stress relief for many others.

CFR is a national non-profit support and education program for women who currently have or previously have had breast cancer.

The number of participants is limited, and the deadline for submitting an application is Aug. 19.

Since 1996, CFR has provided services for more than 4,500 cancer survivors across the country. Local and national sponsors provide monetary support and volunteers to help staff the retreats.
