Warriors on Water event fetes vets

The first Warriors on the Water tournament took place May 19 at Shearon Harris Lake in honor of service personnel from North Carolina who have returned from the Afghan and Iraq wars. Three Desert Storm veterans, Hal Abshire, Greg Lehr, and Bob Cunningham, were responsible for initiating the event that attracted 57 boats bedecked with American flags at the rear and yellow ribbons at the front.

Adam Spell and Walt Moore topped the field with 15.96 pounds. Spell also hooked the big bass of the day.

Other top teams were Ivan Honeycutt and Caleb Dunquest, second, with 11.91 pounds; Alan Thompson and Jack Standford, third, with 11.33 pounds; John Nunn and Mike McCleish, fourth with 10.78 pounds; and Rick Scarzaboro and Matthew Dragovich, fifth, with 10.36 pounds.

• Ties were the name of the game at the May 13 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament at Jordan Lake.

Mark Inman of Haw River tied Boogie Atkins of Greenville, Va., for second place with each fisherman weighing in 18-08 and each receiving $2,196.

In the Co-angler Division, Jamie Baynard of Clayton tied Kevin Fizzano of Radford, Va., for the top spot with 8-05. Each angler received $1,977.

• Three Tar Heels ranked among the top five co-anglers at the May 13 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League S.C. Division tournament at Lake Wateree.

Dean Talbert of Albemarle ranked second with 12-04 and earned $1,009; Joe Bridges of Robbinsville placed fourth with 10-10 and banked $471; and Randy Coleman of Gastonia finished fifth with 10-08 and won $404.

• David Williams of Maiden placed third at the May 20 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah River Division tournament at Lake Hartwell. His catch of 18-01 paid $1,525.

Fairview’s Daniel Peninger ranked second among the co-anglers with 14-09 and received $1,127 plus $327 for the co-angler big-bass award with a 5-pound, 7-ounce fish.

• Scott Golden of Roanoke Rapids won the June 3 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division tournament at Lake Gaston. His catch of 15-10 paid $4,428.

Tony Woodard of Four Oaks took the Boater Division big-bass-award of $635 with a 5-pound, 8-ounce fish.

• Brent Long of Catawba may live in North Carolina, but he led the South Carolina team to first place at the June 7-9 Bass Federation Southern Divisional tournament at Old Hickory Lake, Tenn.

Long’s winning weight of 37-02 topped the Boater Division and contributed to S.C.’s first-place haul of 223-24. S.C. earned $33,000 for the victory for conservation, youth and fishing outreach projects.

As state winner, Long will receive an invitation to the Federation Championship. He will be joined by Bryan Thrift of Shelby, the top finisher for the N.C. team and fourth overall in the Boater Division.

N.C. finished the team competition with 179-12.

• Salisbury’s Rodney Bell won the June 10 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League N.C. Division tournament at High Rock Lake with a five-fish tournament limit totaling 19 pounds, 10 ounces and received $4,279.00.

Steve Sink of Winston-Salem placed second with 18-03 and earned $2,140.00.

Another Salisbury angler, Phil Maness, ranked third with 17-07 and banked $1,426.00.

Other scores were Terry James of Wadesboro, fourth, with 16-10 for $998.00; Larry Pearson of Cramerton, fifth, with 16-02 for $856.00; Carl Johnson of Apex, sixth, with 16-00, for $785.00; Maurice Freeze of Concord, seventh, with 14-07 for $713.00; Doug Young of Salisbury, eighth, with 13-06 for $642.00; Chuck Douthit of Mooresville, ninth, with 13-05 for $571.00; and Steve Robinson of Kingsport, Tenn., 10th, with 13-01 for $499.00.

Pearson tied Roger Pope of Statesville for big-fish honors with each angler weighing in a 5-pound, 10-ounce bass, and each receiving $302.50.

Mike Shatley of North Wilkesboro placed first among the co-anglers with 12-13 and collected $2,140.

Other top finishers on the co-angler side were Hubert Roman of Lexington, second, with 10-07 for $1,070.00; Junior Self of Vale, third, with 10-02 for $712.00; Tony Stafford of Kernersville, fourth, with 9-13 for $499.00; and Eric Rothrock of High Point, fifth, with 8-00 for $428.00.

David Perron of Bluefield, Va., took the co-angler big-fish award of $302.00 with a 5-pound, 9-ounce bass.

• Two Tar Heel fishermen placed in the money among the co-anglers at the June 14-17 Stren Series Northeast Division tournament at Kerr Lake.

Gary Love of Roanoke Rapids finished second with 17-00 and earned $4,000; Jay Garrad of Durham ranked fifth with 12-10 and collected $1,980.
