Glouse takes win by dropshotting points and ditches.
Upstate anglers pretty much dominated the boater side of the 2012 Bass Fishing League tournament held Sunday (Feb. 12) on Lake Keowee.
Greg Glouse of Liberty fished a dropshot rig to catch five bass weighing 16 pounds and win the $5,133 first prize.Glouse rigged his dropshot with a green finesse worm in 60 feet of water, and worked ditches and points.
Robby Hipps of Simpsonville, who took the early lead, finished second with 15.01 pounds. He won $2,566. Hipps was flipping a 1/2-ounce Candy Bass jig around boat docks in 3 to 25 feet of water.
Brian Tidwell of Seneca finished third with 13.09 pounds, winning $1,710. Tidwell, who recently won two local tournaments in January, has also qualified for the 2012 BFL All-American to be held May 16-19 on the Potomac River at Maryland’s National Harbor.
Brandon Cobb of Greenwood finished fourth with12.13 pounds, earning $1,198. Cobb, who is senior at Clemson this year, was fishing a dropshot rig with a finesse green pumpkin worm. Cobb was fishing in 40 to 55 feet of water around deep water ditches, pockets and points.
Chris Baxter of Winder, GA, finished fifth with 12.10 pounds. He won $1,027.
Barry Beasley of Blackville landed the event’s big bass, which weighed in at 6.07 pounds. This fish anchored Beasley’s sixth-place stringer, which totaled 12.09 pounds.
On the co-angler side, Jeff Fletcher of Tiger GA, finished first with four bass weighing 10 pounds and won $2,566. Fletcher also tied for the big bass weighing 4.15 pounds.
David Clark of Moore finished second with five bass that weighed 9.08 pounds to pocket $1,283.
Georgia angler Ken Wheeler finished third with 8.13 pounds, earning $855. Wheeler tied with Fletcher for the big bass.
Simpsonville’s Derrick Wilson finished fourth with 8.11 pounds, and won $599.
Renee Price of Seneca, one of three women that fished the tournament, finished fifth with 8.07 pounds and won $513.
The 2012 Walmart BFL qualifier was the first of four one-day qualifying tournaments for 320 anglers and co-anglers in the Savannah River Division. Anglers and co-anglers earn points in each qualifier with the top 40 anglers and co-anglers facing off in regional tournaments to with a chance to win a new Ranger boat and Chevy Silverado 1500.
The top 40 anglers in the Savannah River Division advance to the regional championship that will be at Lake Seminole in Bainbridge, Ga., on Oct. 4-6. The top six anglers and co-anglers from that regional will the advance to the BFL All-American tournament to compete for up to $120,000.
The next BFL event will be the South Carolina Division tournament on Lake Murray on Feb. 25, followed by the next Savannah River Division tournament will be on Clarks Hill Lake on March 3.
