Travis wins Wylie BASS tourney

Lexington’s Rick McCrary, holding his two biggest largemouth bass, won the April 12 American Bass Association tournament at Tuckertown Lake with 25.01 pounds.

Brian Travis of Conover won the March 29 Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Weekend Series tournament at Lake Wylie with 18.74 pounds and earned $5,000. His catch included the big fish of the day, a 5.59-pound bass worth $290.

Gary Preston of Providence ranked second with 14.65 pounds and received $1,302. He also won a bonus of $500 from the Triton Gold program.

Other scores included Randy Childers of Anderson, S.C., third, with 14.60 pounds for $868; David Hendricks of Cherryville, fourth, with 14.47 pounds for $607; and David Wright of Lexington, fifth, with 14.40 pounds for $521.

Ronnie Bridges placed first among the co-anglers with 9.61 pounds and banked $1,302.

Jamie Denison of Winston-Salem took the second-place prize of $651 with 9.39 pounds.

Maiden’s Gerald Williams ranked third with 9.09 pounds and won $434 plus $145 for the co-angler big fish of the day, a 4.29-pound bass.

Hickory’s George Bost took fourth with 7.83 pounds and collected $304 followed by Bryan Paige of Durham in fifth with 7.42 pounds for $260.

The hometown team from South Carolina won the April 2-4 BASS Federation Nation Southern Divisional tournament at Santee-Cooper, S.C., with 348-14. The team’s top angler and winner of the individual competition was Will Smith of Moncks Corner with a catch of 63-01.

The South Carolina team received a Triton boat and Mercury motor.

The team from North Carolina finished second with 338-02. Jeff Hager of Alexis led the team with 51 pounds.

Smith and Hager and the top angler from each other state in the competition earned the right to fish the BASS Federation Nation Championship.

Three Tar Heel fishermen received checks at the April 3-6 Bassmaster Elite Series Lone Star Shootout at Falcon Lake, Zapata, Texas.

They were Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount, 17th, with 82-11 for $10,500; Kevin Langill of Terrell, 21st, with 82-04 for $10,250; and Marty Stone of Linden, 48th, with 71-03 for $10,000.

Paul Elias of Laurel, Mississippi, won the event and $100,000 with a four-day haul of 132-08 to establish a new BASS record for total poundage at a four-day tournament. His daily catches were 28-05, 39-01, 27-07, and 37-11. The previous record was 122-14 set by Alabama’s Steve Kennedy at California’s Clear Lake in 2007.

Terry Scroggins of Palatka, Fla., placed second with 132-04 and earned $42,000 thanks to a final day catch of 44-04 or nearly 9 pounds per fish.

The big fish for each day of the event weighed more than 10 pounds. Scott Campbell of Springfield, Mo., had the biggest hawg with a bass weighing 13-02. The big fish paid $1,000.

Scott Smith of Apex placed fourth at the April 5 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Shenandoah Division tournament at Smith Mountain Lake, Va. Smith’s catch of 15-02 paid $1,129. Winston-Salem’s Chris Noble ranked fourth among the co-anglers with 9-10, and he won $565.

Roger Pope of Statesville captured the April 5 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League N.C. Division tournament at Lake Wylie with a five-fish catch totaling 19-10. He banked $4,874.

Other top finishers included Travis, second with 19-06 for $2,867; Obby Land of Cherryville, third with 18-10 for $1,911; Bobby Hunter of Sherrills Ford, fourth with 18-02 for $1,338; and Jason Threadgill of Albemarle, fifth with 17-11 for $935.

Charlotte’s Will Petty won the big-fish prize of $935 with a 6-pound, 8-ounce bass.

Gastonia’s Ken Fender topped the co-anglers with 15-06 and earned $2,867. He also had the co-angler big fish of the day with a 6-pound bass worth an additional $467.

Other co-angler scores included Bobby Henderson of Charlotte, second, with 14-12 that paid $1,434; Jamie Amerson of High Point, third, with 14-08 that paid $957; and Thurman Lowry of Lexington, fifth, with 12-05 that paid $537.

Henderson’s Mark Robertson took the top prize of $4,653 at the April 12 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Piedmont Division tournament at Kerr Lake with 18-02. He also received a Ranger contingency bonus of $821.

Ray Griffin, also of Henderson, placed second with 17-12 and earned $2,737.

The fourth and fifth spots went to two Creedmoor fishermen. Fourth-place finisher Greg Lineberry had 16-14 and won $1,277 plus the big-fish award of $870 for a 6-pound, 5-ounce bass. Alan Thomerson weighed in 16.13 and received $1,095.

Anthony Wright of Rocky Mount ranked second among the co-anglers with 14-09 and banked $1,334. Lexington’s Terry Wien won the co-angler big-fish prize of $420 with a 5-pound, 13-ounce bass.

Kenneth Hundley of Matthews won the April 5 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League South Carolina Division tournament at Lake Hartwell, S.C., with 17-15 and collected $3,053.

Albemarle’s Jeremy Talbert claimed the fifth-place prize of $838 with 15-12.

Lewis Thomasson Jr. of Charlotte ranked fifth in the Co-angler Division and received $351. Fayetteville’s Dan Bowling caught the big fish among the co-anglers. His 4-pound, 6-ounce bass paid $225.
