Sorrell takes Lake Champlain crown

Rodney Sorrell of Stokesdale captured a BASS Northern Tour event at Lake Champlain, N.Y., and won $23,100.

Rodney Sorrell of Stokesdale won his first BASS title by edging out Kotaro Kiriyama of Moody, Ala., by one ounce at the Aug. 17-19 Bassmaster Northern Tour event at Lake Champlain, Plattsburgh, N.Y. Sorrell used wacky-style and drop-shot rigs to take a three day haul of 53 pounds, 2 ounces to claim $23,100 in cash and a Triton boat and Mercury outboard.

“It’s just unbelievable,” Sorrell said. “It’s a dream I’ve had since I started fishing as a little kid.”

Other Tar Heels earning checks were Pat Golden of High Point, 26th, with 41-05 for $1,848; and Gary Wade of Pleasant Garden, 42nd, with 36-12 for $2,155. Wade also banked $1,000 for the big fish on Day 1 with a 5-pound, 6-ounce bass.

Erroll Duckett of Charlotte placed 26th in the Non-boater Division with 22-08 and collected $360.

Matt Arey of Shelby won $25,000 as the top co-angler at the August 2-5 Wal-Mart FLW Tour Championship at Lake Logan Martin, Birmingham, Ala.

Arey weighed 5 bass at 11 pounds, 15 ounces, to win the Co-Angler Championship, got $29,000 in prize money, and will have his Co-Angler Division entry fees paid next year by Ranger Boats.

Second-place finisher Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg, S.C., the 2006 Co-Angler of the Year, had five bass that weighed 10 pounds, 8 ounces, winning $15,000 for second place.

“It was a wonderful day,” said Arey, who rooms with Montgomery during tournaments and had finished behind him all year. “I had a gut feeling that today might be the day I took home my first victory.”

Arey threw a drop-shot and Shaky Head worm in 12 to 18 feet of water, targeting offshore structure while fishing with Ranger pro Rob Kilby of Hot Springs, Ark.

Chris Baumgardner of Gastonia placed second and won $10,000 at the Aug. 16 Stren Series event at the Potomac River near La Plata, Md.

Christopher Burns of Moncure and Butch Zadlo of Boone ranked fourth and fifth respectively among the co-anglers. Burns earned $2,420; Zadlo received $1,920.

Linden’s Marty Stone placed 20th and earned $11,000 at the July 27-30 Bassmaster American tournament at Lake Wylie.

Two Lexington anglers earned checks at the July 19-22 Stren Series Tournament at Lake Erie, Cleveland, Ohio. Chris Baldwin finished sixth and won $6,050; Gerald Beck placed 15th and received $1,550.

Stone ranked 28th at the August 10-13 Capitol Clash at the Potomac River, Charles County, Md., with 32-03, and Britt Myers of Mt, Holly placed 47th with 25-13. They each earned $10,000.

Kevin Langill of Terrell finished 50th with 22-13 and received $10,000 plus a $1,000 bonus as the Day 1 Busch Heavyweight leader.

Among the co-anglers, Andy Montgomery of Grover finished 13th with 17-01 and won $1,200, and David Woodall of Angier placed 16th with 16-09 and earned $1,000.

Kelly Jordon of Mineola, Texas, took the top prize of $102,000 with a four-day catch of 60-09.
