Williams will carry half-pound margin into final day on Lake Norman

David Williams didn’t have quite as good a day on Friday as he did on Thursday in the BASS Southern Open on Lake Norman, but the angler from Maiden is still ahead of the pack.

Williams weighed in a 13-pound, 15-ounce limit in Friday’s second round and remained in first place entering Saturday’s final day of competition. He has 27 pounds, 6 ounces, a half-pound better than Andy Montgomery of Blackstone, S.C., who had 13-12 to jump from fourth place to second.

Chad Morgenthaler of Coultetville, Ill., is in third with 24 pounds, 11 ounces.

The top 12 pros will return to Lake Norman on Saturday to battle for the first prize of $5,980 in cash and a full-rigged bass boat. Besides Williams, four other pros from North Carolina will be on the water: Shane Lehew of Charlotte is fifth with 23-9; Hank Cherry Jr. of Maiden is seventh with 22-7; Drew Montgomery of Denver is 11th with 21-8 and Shane Lineberger of Lincolnton is 12th with 21-8.

Saturday’s weigh-in will be at 4 p.m. at Bass Pro Shops in Concord. Blast-off is at 7 a.m. at Blythe Landing near Cornelius.
