Montgomery moves up from second to first with solid final-day catch
South Carolina bass pro Andy Montgomery sacked his third solid limit of bass on Saturday and won the BASS Southern Open on Lake Norman with a three-day total of 37 pounds, 10 ounces.
Montgomery, from Blacksburg, S.C., skipped docks with a half-ounce Shooter jig and Strike King Rage Bug trailer to bank $5,980 and a fully rigged bass boat. He had already qualified for the 2015 Bassmasters Classic on Lake Hartwell through the BASS Elite Series
David Williams of Maiden, N.C., who led the tournament after each of the first two days, had a poor closing day and dropped to eighth place with 32-3.
“I caught a lot of bass under the walkways of docks on flat banks,” said Montgomery, who also caught a few bass on a white buzzbait fished on flat, rocky banks. “I thought I could outlast the field in a three-day event this time of year,” Montgomery said.
Floridian Richard Howes finished second with 36-2. Ronald Farrow of Rock Hill, S.C., was third with 35-1 in his first-ever Bassmaster tournament.
North Carolina pros finished fourth, fifth and sixth: Shane Lehew of Charlotte with 33-4 and Drew Montgomery of Denver with 33-0; and Shane Lineberger of Lincolnton with 32-8.
Alabama’s Tyler Boyle won the Co-Angler division with 19-8, winning a fully rigged bass boat.
