Lincolnton ‘royalty’ wins CATT Classic on Kerr Lake

Mike and Josh Queen of Lincolton won the season-ending CATT Classic on Kerr Lake, taking home more than $13,000 of tournament director Brett Collins'(right) money.

Big second day sets up Queens for big payday

Mike and Josh Queen of Lincolnton combined an opening-round catch of 15.09 pounds with a closing catch of 12.84 pounds to win at the May 18-19 CATT Classic on Kerr Lake.

Their two-day total of 27.94 pounds, worth $13,056, edged out the second-place catch of 27.78 pounds brought in by Robert Walser of Lexington and Mack Lowe of Indian Trail who had 13.56 and 14.22 pounds, good enough for $4,885.

The title was up for grabs Sunday after Tony Woodard of Four Oaks and Scott Smith of Apex, who lead after the first day with 16.61 pounds, brought only 5.6 to the scales to fall to 45th place and out of the money.

Because big fish were hard to find, very little weight separated the top five teams, which all had more than 27 pounds.

Paul Rigsbee of Timberlake and Ryan Rigsbee of Apex placed third with 27.44 pounds for $2,000; Robin Collins of Rockingham and Ronnie White placed fourth with 27.13 pounds for $1,500; and Pat Tierney of Denver and Maurice Freeze of Concord took fifth with 27.07 pounds for $1,200.

Rounding out the top 10 were: Neil Roberson of Rocky Mount and Scott Griffin of Sherrills Ford, sixth with 26.90, winning $1,000; Cory Byrum of Garysburg and Corey Leonard of Castalia, seventh with 26.45, winning $750; William Blanton of Fayetteville and Steve Belch, eighth with 26.29, and first-day big fish, 4.80 pounds, winning $1,100; Scooter Lilly and Mike Layton, ninth with 25.76, winning $575; and Tony Brewer and Scott Faulkner of Lexington, 10th with 25.66, winning $550.
