Kemp takes BFL tourney at Kerr

Mark Smith and Bill “Hillbilly” Martin display part of their winning catch from an April 26 Catfish Anglers Association Neuse River tournament at Fayetteville.

William Kemp of Scotland Neck won the May 3 Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League North Carolina Division tournament at Kerr Lake with a five-fish catch totaling 14-09 and banked $4,352.

Maurice Freeze of Concord placed second with 14-04 and earned $2,133.

Other top finishers were David Wright of Lexington, third, with 14-4 for $2,133; Chad Poteat of Mount Airy, fourth, with 13-15 for $1,195; and Chris Baldwin of Lexington, fifth, with 13-13 for $1,024.

Poteat captured the big-fish award of $790 with a 6-pound, 6-ounce bass.

Ken Fender of Dallas topped the co-anglers with 10 pounds, 8 ounces and received $2,561.

The other top co-anglers were Michael Davis of New London, second, with 10-06 for $1,280; John M. Cook of Matthews, third, with 9-15 for $726; Bobby Henderson of Charlotte, fourth, with 9-15 for $726; and Zach Lyles of Mooresville, fifth, with 9-13 for $512.

Albemarle’s Justin Burleson had the co-angler big-fish of the day with a 5-pound, 13-ounce bass and collected $395.

Co-angler Monica Altman of Angier placed 14th with 5-11 and won $650 at the April 10 Women’s Bassmaster Tour event at Lewisville Lake, Texas.

David Wolak of Wake Forest ranked 39th with 27-07 and won $560 at the April 24-26 Bassmaster Central Open at the Red River, Shreveport, La.

Gastonia’s Chris Baumgardner won $20,000 with 12-12 at the April 26-27 National Guard Tournament at Lake Norman.

Brian Travis of Conover won the April 24- 26 Bass Federation National Championship at Lake Wylie with 45-09 to claim the “Living the Dream” package, which included $10,000, free entries to either the FLW Tour or Stren Series, a Chevy towing vehicle, and a Ranger boat.

Three Tar Heel anglers received checks at the May 1-4 Bassmaster Elite Series Pride of Georgia tournament at Clarks Hill Lake, Ga.

They were Britt Myers of Lake Wylie, 13th, with 40-09 that paid $10,800; Dustin Wilks of Rocky Mount, 21st, with 37-12 that paid $10,250; and Wolak, 33rd, with 34-4 that paid $10,000.

Mooresville’s David Cooke ranked 13th at the May 8-10 Bassmaster Southern Open at Santee-Cooper, Manning, S. C. His catch of 30-04 paid $2,907.

Other scores were Brian Holder of Gastonia, 29th, with 25-12 for $1,400; David Davis of Hollister, 42nd, with 24-00 for $529; Ken Langill of Terrell, 44th, with 23-15 for $529; and Felton Jackson of Clinton, 49th, with 21-09 for $529.

Monroe’s John Strider placed eighth among the co-anglers with 14-08 and earned $1,965. Co-angler Charles Sipe of Fuquay-Varina finished 28th with 9-02 for $1,332. His 9-pound, 2-ounce bass also took the Day 2 big-bass prize of $300

George Beville of Apex finished 46th with 6-12 and received $155.

The Rainbow Gun Club held its Second Rockfish Tournament April 19 at the lower Roanoke River to benefit the Boy Scouts of America. The 7 a.m.-3 p.m. tournament raised $760 for the Boy Scouts.

Jimmie Keel of Tarboro finished first and collected $220 and a trophy, while Timmy Whitehurst of Tarboro finished second to earn a trophy and $110.

Rainbow Gun Club, at the Roanoke River in Bertie County, was incorporated in 1922 to manage fish and game on the property and participate in community events.
