Dixie High School hooked the big ones
On one of the hottest days yet of the summer, six of the Youth Bass Fishing Clubs and one Bass Federation Junior Club competed for bragging rights as the State Bass Fishing Champions in the The Bass Federation of South Carolina Junior Championship on Lake Murray Saturday, May 21st.
The school clubs participating in the tournament were:
• Dixie High School
• Saluda High School
• Camden High School
• Santee Junior Bassmasters (Wilson Hall—Sumter)
• North Augusta Middle School
• Bonds Career Center (Greer)
Dixie High School’s bass fishing club was deemed the State’s Bass Fishing Champion Team with a total weight of 22.9 pounds. Six students competed from Dixie to help the team win this title, two of which, Alex Davenport (for the 11-14 age group with 5 fish at 6.17 pounds) and Kameron Harbin (for the 12-18 age group with four fish at 9.06 pounds), will be heading to the National Guard Junior World Championship later in the year in Hot Springs, Arkansas for a chance to fish for thousands of dollars in scholarships. Dixie High School participating team members received free rod and reels courtesy of Pure Fishing. Kameron and Alex also received funds from Pure Fishing for travel to the National Guard Junior World Championship.
Interested in forming a bass fishing club at your school? All you need to do is get a minimum of six students (within the 11-18 year old range) with dues paid and you can have a Youth Bass Fishing Club. You’ll also need an adult at your school to help lead the club, provide advice and help arrange at least two club tournaments, fundraisers, speakers and other learning sessions pertaining to fishing for club meetings. The Youth Bass Fishing Clubs is a product of a partnership between the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and The Bass Federation of South Carolina with help and support from parents, teachers, school districts, local bait & tackle shops, community partners and Pure Fishing.
