Bunker Hill High School duo wins TBF/FLW High School State Championship

Bunker Hill High School won the FLW/TBF North Carolina state championship, and advances to the Southeastern Conference championship later this year.

Dylan Lamm, Austin Blair caught 14-13 to win championship

The Bunker Hill High School duo of Dylan Lamm and Austin Blair brought a five-bass limit to the scale Saturday weighing 14 pounds, 13 ounces, to win the 2016 TBF/FLW High School Fishing North Carolina State Championship on Lake Norman.

The win earned the team trophies, the title of state champions and advanced the team to the High School Fishing Southeastern Conference championship on Lake Cumberland in Somerset, Kentucky, on September 16-17.

“We caught the majority of our fish in the morning on a River2Sea Whopper Plopper,” said Blair, who will be a junior at Bunker Hill this fall.

“We were targeting shady areas and docks,” Lamm added. “All of our fish but one came on the Whopper Plopper.”

Forty-one teams competed in the tournament, which launched from launched from Blythe Landing in Cornelius.

The top four teams on Lake Norman that advanced to the Southeastern Conference championship were:

  1st:       Bunker Hill High School, Claremont, N.C. – Dylan Lamm and Austin Blair, five bass, 14-13

  2nd:     South Granville High School, Creedmoor, N.C. – Noah Howard and Brady Trueheart, five bass, 14-3

  3rd:      Beddingfield High School, Wilson, N.C. – Tyler Dunn and Matthew Shrewsbury, five bass, 13-1

  4th:      Cherryville High School, Cherryville, N.C. – Seth Hartman and John Crain, five bass, 11-1

Rounding out the top 10 teams were:

  5th:      Bandys High School, Catawba, N.C. – Logan Anderson and Tyler Black, five bass, 10-13

  6th:      North Carolina Student Angler Federation – Carson Cochran,  Denver, N.C., and Jacob Moore, Stanley, N.C., five bass, 10-10

  7th:      Hickory Grove Christian School, Charlotte, N.C. – Tyler Jones and Trey Oliver, five bass, 10-8

  8th:      Perquimans County High School, Hertford, N.C. – Dylan Valousky and Timothy Estep, five bass, 10-8

  9th:      Cherryville High School, Cherryville, N.C. – Trevor Harrill and Austin Treadway, five bass, 10-7

  10th:    North Carolina Student Angler Federation – Hunter White, Black Mountain, N.C., and Bennett Bauer, China Grove, N.C., four bass, 10-4

The 2016 North Carolina State High School Fishing Championship was a two-person (team) event for students in grades 7-12. The top 10 percent from each TBF/FLW state championship field will advance to a High School Fishing conference championship along with the top three teams from each of the seven TBF/FLW High School Fishing Opens held this season. The top 10 percent of each conference championship field will then advance to the High School Fishing National Championship, coinciding with the TBF National Championship and an FLW Tour stop in the spring of 2017. The High School Fishing national champions will each receive a $5,000 college scholarship to the school of their choice.

In addition to the High School Fishing National Championship, all High School Fishing anglers nationwide automatically qualify for the world’s largest high school bass tournament, the 2016 High School Fishing World Finals.
