Marty Robinson currently in 15th place
Lake Wylie’s Britt Myers sits comfortably in second place after day one of the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Winyah Bay in Georgetown. Myers brought a 5-fish limit to the scales, weighing in 16-8. Although he is more than 3 pounds behind leader Carl Jocumsen of Australia, Myers feels good about his position.
“Practice was up and down for me, but what I learned was crucial to how today panned out. I caught them pretty well today, but I was concerned about how I would do after losing an hour this morning because of the weather delay,” said Myers.
The weather delay Myers mentioned kept anglers off the water until a thin line of severe thunderstorms had passed through the area, which altered some anglers’ plans for how far they would run today. Myers, who had planned to make the long run to the Cooper River, stuck to his plan, and it paid off for him.
“It really is a gamble to make that run, because it limits the amount of time you can spend fishing, but I felt good about some areas down there. I probably won’t do things much differently tomorrow,” said Myers.
Lyman’s Marty Robinson is in 15th place with 10-9, and while he’d love to be higher, he said he is pretty happy with how today went for him.
“I ran about an hour north. I knew if I brought at least 8 pounds in today, I would be in good shape. We’ll try to do it again tomorrow, and if I make it to Saturday, I will probably make the run to the Cooper River. I don’t know though, I might chicken out from that,” Robinson said.
Even though most anglers, including Robinson, agree that the majority of the bigger fish that will be brought to these scales will come from the Cooper, they all understand what a huge risk it is. It’s one that Elite Series rookie Brett Preuett made clear on stage while weighing in the one fish he caught in the Cooper River.
“I made that long run, two hours, then I caught this fish 10 minutes before I had to leave to make it back in time. I still think I made the right gamble, but the gamble just didn’t pay off for me,” said Preuett, who is currently in 96th place.
Jason Williamson of Wagener is in 48th place, just inside that magic 50 spot that all anglers hope to be in after tomorrow’s weigh in. Those top 50 will make the cut to fish Saturday. Williamson brought in 5 fish weighing 8-4.
Davy Hite of Ninety Six is in 60th place with 7-7, but knows a decent day tomorrow can propel him into fishing on Saturday.
Andy Montgomery of Blacksburg is in 80th place after bringing in just two fish weighing 5-3. Montgomery said he had a rough day, and isn’t sure what he’s going to do tomorrow.
Casey Ashley of Donalds caught a few fish today, but he didn’t bring any keepers to the scales and currently sits in an 8-way tie for last place.
Come see daily weigh-ins at the Carroll Ahsmore Campbell Marine Complex at 800 Venture Drive in Georgetown, S.C. Weigh-ins begin at 3:30 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Plenty of other activities will be going on to keep everyone entertained, especially Saturday and Sunday when the 2016 Winyah Bay Heritage Festival will be held on the same site.
