Hank Cherry in 26th, David Williams in 32nd
Lake Wylie’s Britt Myers excited his home state crowd today when he brought in a 5-limit bag of fish that tipped the scales at 21-7, giving him the lead with a total of 37-15 at the end of day two of the Huk Performance Fishing Bassmaster Elite at Winyah Bay.
Myers sat in 2nd place after yesterday’s weigh-in, and he went back to the same area today – the Cooper River. He said the day started off great for him once he was done with the 2-hour, one-way trip.
“We had a 2 hour run, and I got on my waypoint and I made a long cast, and I looked at my camera guys and when I did, I thought I had some hydrilla on and I pulled back, and it pulled back, and that was my big fish, first cast of the day,” said Myers.
That fish weighed 6-8, and set the tone for the rest of his fishing day. The entire 4-hour trip to and from the Cooper River did come with a bit of suspense, however. Myers hit something, damaging his propeller, and causing him to beach his boat. Myers stood in pluff mud, checking things out as the clock ticked.
Thinking he may not make it back in time, Myers gave credit to fellow angler Fred Roumbanis, who idled in place until Myers got things running again, fortunately with time to spare.
Yesterday’s leader, Carl Jocumsen of Australia also made the run to the Cooper River for the second day in a row, but he fell way short of yesterday’s bag. Jocumsen only managed one fish today that weighed 1-8, dropping him to 16th place and showing how quickly things can go downhill.
One of the biggest surprises of this tournament so far is Texan Kelly Jordon currently sitting in 2nd place after bringing only one fish to the scales yesterday. Luckily, that lone fish weighed 8-5. And also luckily, Jordon struck gold today, catching 5 keepers that weighed a whopping 24-7 for a total weight of 32-12 going into day three.
Lyman’s Marty Robinson is currently 11th after bring 11-5 to the scales today, making his two-day total 21-14. Robinson has not make the run to the Cooper River so far in the tournament, though he did fish there one day during practice. He said he’s tempted to make the run tomorrow, but he’s not quite sure yet what he will do.
Hank Cherry Jr, of Maiden, N.C. sits in 26th place. Cherry was the first angler to weigh in today after experiencing some trouble with his livewell pump. His five keepers weighed 10-10, giving him a total of 19-10 so far.
Fellow Tarheel angler David Williams is in 32nd. His 10-12 today gives him a total weight of 18-14.
No other anglers from the Carolinas made the top 51 cut, and will not fish tomorrow. Jason Williamson of Wagener, S.C. finishes in 55th place with a total of 16-11. Shane Lineberger of Lincolnton, N.C. finishes 75th with 13-6.
Davy Hite of Ninety-Six, S.C. did not weight a fish today and finishes with a total of 7-7 for 104th place. Blacksburg, S.C. angler Andy Montgomery took 105th with 7-4, and Casey Ashley, who brought weighed in only fish total for the tournament finishes in 109th with a total weight of 1-8.
Come see the top 51 anglers weigh in tomorrow at the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex at 800 Venture Drive in Georgetown, S.C. Weigh-in begins at 3:30, and plenty of other activities will be going on to keep everyone entertained, as the the 2016 Winyah Bay Heritage Festival is being held on the same site.
